Writing the Moments That Define a Generation

Bruce Modzelewski is a storyteller shaped by football, family legacy, and a deep respect for the generation that came of age during the Vietnam War. His novel Run for Your Life reflects a lifelong connection to the game and a profound curiosity about the young men whose dreams were interrupted by history.

Raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Bruce grew up in a football family where the sport was more than recreation. It was identity, discipline, and pride. His father and uncle both played for the Cleveland Browns, and many of Bruce’s early memories were formed in the stands of Cleveland Stadium, watching athletes compete with heart and resilience.

But it was his uncle’s path from professional football training camp to the battlefields of Vietnam that left the deepest impression. Drafted in 1966, his uncle later suffered the long term effects of Agent Orange. That experience shaped Bruce’s understanding of sacrifice, brotherhood, and the hidden costs of war. It also planted the seeds for the story he would one day write.

With Run for Your Life, Bruce combines personal legacy with extensive historical research to create a powerful narrative set in the segregated South of the 1960s. Through the lives of two gifted young athletes, he explores themes of race, ambition, loyalty, love, and the psychological impact of combat. His writing captures both the electric intensity of Friday night football and the emotional weight of Vietnam with honesty and authenticity.

Bruce is drawn to stories about identity forged under pressure. His characters are complex, driven, and deeply human. They face difficult choices shaped by family expectations, social division, and national conflict. At the heart of his work is a simple but enduring question: what happens when youthful dreams collide with reality.

Through his work, Bruce seeks to tell stories that matter. Stories of brotherhood. Stories of resilience. Stories about the long road home.
